  • staying awake is important while driving

Any tricks on staying awake while driving at night?

There's a company thing for me tonight, and I won't be getting home 'til after 11:30. Even though things are slow, it's been a really long day already. Still at least 6 hours until I can sleep.

It would be nice to have tomorrow off, but no such luck.

  • Don't eat sugar. Drink coffee only in the last half or third of the trip. Make frequent stops where you get out of the car and move around. Drink lots of water (stay hydrated *and* cause yourself to pee, which helps you make frequent stops). Breathe deeply. Listen to talk radio and argue with it.

And... If you find yourself nodding off, stop at a motel and give up.

  • Crunchy, healthy snacks. Carrot sticks (or baby carrots), celery sticks, apple slices, that sort of thing. Lots of water, as Homer references above. And bring the temp in the car down just above the point where you're uncomfortably chilly.

  • Drive on the wrong side of the freeway. It will definitely keep you on your toes.
